SC drops suo motu proceedings against CM Punjab in Pakpattan case

ISLAMABADThe Supreme Court (SC) on Monday dropped suo motu proceedings against Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar after the provincial chief executive submitted an unconditional apology in the Pakpattan DPO transfer case.CM Buzdar, former inspector general of Punjab Kaleem Imam and Ahsan Jameel Gujjar – a close aide of the Maneka family – submitted unconditional apologies in court. Justice Nisar warned that the matter would be reopened if there was any future interference in police affairs. The bench had given the respondents two options, to either to submit unconditional apologies or face another inquiry by the bench itself. All three respondents including CM Buzdar opted to tender an unconditional apology. The chief justice also warned inquiry officer Mehr Khaliq Lak he may face a backlash from politicians for his work on the inquiry report holding Buzdar and Gujjar guilty of interference in police matters. The trio also withdrew their earlier replies in the case after Chief Justice Saqib Nisar expressed his displeasure.

CM Buzdar denies he was responsible for Pakpattan DPO’s transfer

Justice Nisar asked what personal enmity an inquiry officer could have with the Punjab government in reference to Buzdar’s claim that the inquiry officer, Mehr Khaliq Lak, held a grudge against the incumbent provincial government for not appointing him inspector general.Nisar maintained that Gujjar had intervened in official government affairs. “When we conduct an inquiry under Article 62 (1)(f) then Naya Pakistan will emerge,” retorted the chief justice.Earlier Buzdar had rejected an inquiry report deeming him responsible for the transfer of former Pakpattan DPO Rizwan Gondal.

Lak found the Chief Minister’s Office responsible for ordering the transfer.

Gujjar also submitted a reply earlier on Saturday asking for proceedings against him to be dropped.Gujjar is a close friend of Khawar Maneka, the first lady’s former husband. After Maneka’s car was intercepted by Gondal in August, the Pakpattan DPO was called to a meeting at the CM House where Gujjar was present. He claims he was intimidated into apologising to Maneka which he refused to do. Afterwards, Gondal was transferred from his post, the orders being given in the middle of the night.
